This Arab-Sassanian silver dirham, minted between 632 and 702 A.D., is a significant artifact from the early Islamic period. Issued under the authority of Abu Said al-Muhallab ibn Abi Sufra, a notable military commander and governor, the coin represents the transitional phase following the Arab conquest of the Sassanian Empire.
The obverse of the coin displays a detailed portrait of a Sassanian ruler wearing a winged crown, surrounded by Pahlavi script, reflecting the enduring influence of Persian culture during the early Islamic period. The reverse features the classic Sassanian fire altar with attendants, a motif deeply rooted in Zoroastrian tradition.
