A well-crafted tinned copper bowl from 19th-century Afghanistan, finely engraved inside and out with intricate vegetal, geometric, and figural designs. The exterior is encircled by a bold band of cursive inscription interspersed with roundels, including the name Sultan Muhammed Kandahari, followed by further benedictory phrases. Below the inscription, the body is decorated with repeating cartouches and stylised floral motifs arranged in a neatly ordered lattice.
The interior features a central medallion containing a finely engraved lion within a lush foliate setting, enclosed by a series of concentric borders of scrolling floral designs. The underside displays additional engraved ornamentation, including star motifs and further geometric patterning. Traces of tinning and areas of warm copper toning remain visible, giving the bowl an attractive, time-worn patina.
This elegant vessel reflects the refined metalworking traditions of 19th-century Kandahar, combining calligraphy, symbolism, and decorative engraving in a harmonious composition. A distinctive and historically resonant example of Afghan metalwork.
