Auction FAQs

Answers to common questions about buying, selling, valuations and visiting Kew Auctions.

Planning to buy or sell at auction? These answers explain the main steps at Kew Auctions in Richmond, London. Check the terms for your chosen sale or consignment and contact us about any item-specific questions.

How do I request an auction valuation from Kew Auctions?

Use the Sell With Us form or email info@kewauctions.com with a description and photographs of your item. Auction valuations are complimentary and confidential. Include dimensions, photographs of marks or signatures, condition details and any ownership history or supporting paperwork you have.

What does Kew Auctions sell?

Kew Auctions handles Islamic and Indian art, Middle Eastern art, Asian art, European art, antiquities, rugs and carpets, and fine and decorative art. Browse the departments for examples of the categories handled, or contact the team if you are unsure where your item belongs.

How do I register to bid?

Create a Kew Auctions account and register for the individual sale in advance. The buying terms require government-issued photo identification and proof of residential address dated within the last six months. New clients are encouraged to register at least 24 hours before the sale to allow time for approval. Additional information is required when bidding for an organisation.

Can I bid online, by telephone or by absentee bid?

Kew Auctions offers online bidding, telephone bidding and absentee bidding. Check the arrangements for your chosen sale. Contact client services to arrange a telephone bid, and submit absentee bids at least 24 hours before the sale. Registration and approval are required before you can bid.

What is the buyer’s premium?

The buyer’s premium is a charge added to the hammer price. Check the premium, VAT treatment and any other charges in the terms for your chosen sale and lot, and ask client services to confirm the total amount payable before bidding. Your maximum bid should also allow for any collection or shipping costs.

Can I view a lot or request a condition report before bidding?

Yes. Condition reports are available on request, and most viewings are by appointment. Contact Kew Auctions with the sale and lot number to request a report or arrange a viewing. A catalogue description does not necessarily list every fault or repair, so raise any questions about condition before bidding.

When do I need to pay for a successful bid?

The published buying terms require payment within three days of a live auction. Your invoice sets out the hammer price and applicable charges. Contact client services to confirm the accepted payment method and any limits for your transaction. Goods are released only after the full payment has cleared.

How do I arrange collection or shipping?

Contact Kew Auctions to arrange collection or confirm shipping arrangements and costs. Full payment must clear before goods are released. If a courier or another person will collect for you, the conditions of sale require your written instructions and identification from the collector. Confirm collection deadlines and any import or export requirements before arranging transport.

What fees apply when selling at auction?

The Seller Terms and Conditions set out the vendor’s commission, entry fee and other possible charges, including catalogue illustration, loss and damage liability, withdrawal and storage charges. Ask for the charges that will apply to your consignment before agreeing to sell. The hammer price is not the same as the net amount paid to the seller.

When will I receive the proceeds from a sale?

The Seller Terms and Conditions state that settlement of the net amount normally takes place 28 days after the sale, provided the buyer has paid. Commission and applicable expenses are deducted from the proceeds. Contact Kew Auctions if you need information about the settlement of a particular consignment.
