A DECCANI SCHOOL ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPT LEAF DEPICTING THE MIRAJ, INDIA, 16TH – 17TH CENTURY

This Indian miniature painting, an illuminated manuscript leaf, depicts the Mi’raj, or the Night Journey of the Prophet Muhammad. The central figure is depicted veiled and riding the mythical steed Buraq, accompanied by several angels against a celestial background. The composition includes four columns of Persian Nasta’liq script positioned above the illustration and a single line of script below, executed in black and red ink with gold highlighting. The work is rendered in gouache and gold on paper and is mounted within a larger buff-colored card border. The reverse of the leaf is visible through a translucent backing, showing additional script, adhesive tape repairs, residue, and modern handwritten notations.
