Lot 327: A SET OF THREE QAJAR MINIATURE PAINTINGS, PERSIA, 19TH CENTURY
37 views
A trio of vertical compositions executed in gouache on paper, depicting female figures in traditional 19th century Qajar-era attire. The set features a recurring aesthetic of almond-shaped eyes, joined eyebrows, and ornate costuming characteristic of the period. One painting depicts a seated woman holding a stringed instrument, possibly a kamancheh or sitar, leaning against a decorative bolster; a small calligraphic signature in black ink is located in the lower right corner, appearing to read Zaki. The second painting shows a standing figure in a dancing pose with raised arms, wearing a yellow bodice and a voluminous red skirt with a detailed paisley border. The third composition depicts a seated woman playing a large frame drum, known as a daf, dressed in a green jacket and patterned orange trousers with a striped head covering. Each work is mounted within a cream mat and presented in a matching light wood frame.
